MATTY CASH is making his World Cup debut this year – but he’s not playing for England.

Born and raised in England, the Aston Villa star grew up in Buckinghamshire.

But Cash plays his international football for Poland, who face Mexico, Argentina and Saudi Arabia in the group stage in Qatar.

Cash has previously scored one goal for Poland and has played a total of seven games.

Cash is eligible to represent Poland at international level as his mother and late grandfather were both born there.

His mother is also fluent in Polish and Cash has said that he listens to audio with popular Polish phrases.

He changed international affiliation from England to Poland in 2021 and was granted citizenship last October.

He was first called up to the squad in November 2021.

“This is a very important and proud day for me and my family,” Cash said after receiving citizenship.

“My application for Polish citizenship was approved by the Polish authorities.

“I want to thank the President, my family and other people who have helped me. Now it’s time for a new challenge. I will give everything for this country.”

Cash never appeared for England, either at youth or senior level.

The 25-year-old eventually decided to play for Poland to increase his chances of playing regularly in international football.
