QATARI officials have confiscated a Brazilian fan’s flag after mistaking it for the LGBTQ rainbow.

The egregious altercation took place outside Doha’s Lusail Stadium after Saudi Arabia shocked the football world by beating Argentina yesterday.

The fans, known as the Samba Boys, carried the flag of the State of Pernambuco outside the stadium when addressed by officials.

The flag features a rainbow, but officials thought it was an LGBTQ flag and subsequently confiscated the item, allegedly throwing it on the ground and trampling on it.

The flag was carried by Brazilian journalist Victor Pereira and a friend.

He claimed Qatari officials confiscated his mobile phone until he agreed to delete a video he took of the incident.

However, he managed to film several other scenes of the stadium row with Qatari officials.

In a viral clip that has been viewed more than a million times on Twitter, Pereira says: “Guys I’m nervous, I’m actually shaking because we had a Pernambuco flag.”

“I’m shaking because I’ve been attacked by some Qatari officials, people in this outfit and also police officers.

“They came to the women thinking it was an LGBT flag, but actually it’s just the flag of Pernambuco.

“I went to film it and they took my phone. They just gave it back to me after forcing me to delete the recorded video.”

“The guy took the Pernambuco flag, threw it on the ground and stepped on it. My reaction was to pull out my phone and record absolutely everything.”

In Qatar, same-sex relationships are punishable by imprisonment or death.

Conservative measures have lost sight of LGBTQ+ rights, which have been at the heart of controversy surrounding the World Cup.

Fifa officials recently intervened, ordering Qatari officials to stop forcing fans to remove their rainbow hats when entering stadiums.

Eventually, bystanders intervened and calmed the situation after the flag incident.

Pereira said Qatari officials realized their mistake and later apologized.

“They said they had no right to do what they did and if I wanted to I could report it inside because we were near two towers that have cameras and the guy can be identified. I’m trying, but it’s all very complicated.”

The incident was reported to Fifa officials.

Fans attending the 2022 World Cup mostly behaved, an excited Saudi Arabian fan celebrating his country’s win over Argentina by tearing down his door.

Other fans were devastated when Lionel Messi failed to get his team over the line in Argentina’s opening game.
