An unopened Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars figurine fetched nearly £57,000 at auction.

The action toy – made 44 years ago – was an early design for the Jedi Master.

The 3.6″ figure has a double-telescopic blue plastic lightsaber that extends from the right arm.

Maker Kenner also produced figures of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader with the same extendable lightsaber.

But they quickly changed the design due to cost and manufacturing issues.

Subsequent toy figures of the three characters featured a simpler one-piece lightsaber – making the earlier models a huge draw for collectors.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure was released in 1978 to coincide with the success of the first film in the hugely successful sci-fi franchise.

Sir Alec Guinness played the character in the 1977 film.

The figure offered for sale fetched a hammer price of £56,800 in the USA.

Additional auction house fees meant the highest bidder would have spent a total of £67,000 on the figure.

Alex Winter of Hake’s Auctions in York, Pennsylvania said, “Vintage Star Wars figures have continued to appreciate in value – no more than the rarest of the rare, as in this case. It came to us from a high end Star Wars collector.

“We were very satisfied with the end result. The price depends on the rarity.

“This is one of the most desirable of all Star Wars production figures.

“A number of bidders from all over the world have applied.”

The toy figure was still in its sealed bubble wrap which was attached to the Star Wars packing card.

On the back are pictures of 12 Star Wars toy figures that were for sale at the time.

There was also a photo guide showing how to operate the dual telescopic lightsaber.

The world record price for a Star Wars toy figure is £173,000 for a rare prototype version of bounty hunter Boba Fett.
