DEAR DEIDRE: My daughter says horrible things to my granddaughter, her niece.
She constantly undermines me and puts me down.
I feel like she’s bullying me.
I am 66. My granddaughter came to live with us when she was two years old after her mother took her life.
My son, her father, broke up and I became her guardian.
She is now 17 and has grown into a beautiful young woman.
But unfortunately, my 36-year-old daughter has gone the other way — she’s bitter and uncomfortable.
When she starts her insults, I have to walk away to protect myself.
I could happily stand in the middle of a field and just scream.
I don’t think I can take any more, but how can I stop it?
DEIDRE SAYS: You did what you thought was best for your granddaughter.
Your daughter sounds jealous. The nasty words that come out of her mouth are about her DJing – not really about you.
Consider family therapy. I will send you my companion package for consultation.
It would help if you spoke to Family Lives (familylives.org.uk, 0808 800 2222) for parenting advice.
