A LOTTO expert has outlined the steps you need to take to claim your millions if you win.

Many of us have dreamed of winning the lottery and bagging enough to start the jet set lifestyle we’ve always dreamed of.

But what do you actually do when you hit the jackpot?

The National Lottery must conduct strict checks to confirm that you have actually won a prize in order to combat scammers and scammers.

Anita Perez has worked on Lotto’s customer service team for 16 years and has personally announced to many players that they have become millionaires.

Not surprisingly, the exact procedure for verifying a winning ticket is kept very secret.

Anita told The Mirror: “We can’t share certain aspects, but rest assured the process is incredibly strict to ensure nothing is left unturned when it comes to confirming someone is the rightful ticket holder.

“In the initial phase, information is obtained from the ticket holder and reconciled as to which store the winning ticket was purchased from, the day and time it was purchased, etc.

“If this information is provided correctly, the claim will be further investigated and if all checks are passed, the claim will be validated and paid.

“The most important thing for easy validation is to have your ticket and the necessary validation information.”

That said, if you bought a paper ticket in person from a retailer, the expert recommends signing the back of it after you buy it so you can certify that it is indeed yours when you can claim a prize.

You may then want to keep it in a safe place until after the drawing, as the ticket itself will need to be presented during the validation stages.

She continued, “Every call that we treat as a winning call, they’ve brought a product from us that wins money, so we check all the details to confirm the win and it’s amazing when you can do that.”

Anita adds that emotions run high on the other end of the line as she shares the good news.

She continued: “One of my most recent wins was a pair of £1m scratch card so to confirm the one million I had to count the zeros following the one to make sure there were definitely six zeros and I’m not confirming anything I shouldn’t.

“They absolutely loved it, you could hear them both laughing in the background.

“But I feel most compassion for them when they cry, sometimes they literally sob. I had one where I just had to step back and say, ‘Get out of your system, I’m here’.”

A downside of her job is that due to company rules and regulations, Anita is not allowed to buy her own lottery tickets.

Players can buy and check their tickets online by downloading the National Lottery app or at national-lottery.co.uk.

And even if you lose your ticket for any reason and no longer have it, within 30 days of the drawing there is still a chance you could win if you believe you have a real claim.

All you have to do is submit the claim to Camelot in writing.
