A TIKTOK tech tipster shared a neat way to find the spot in your house with the best cell phone signal.
In a video Tuesday, user “Tapsmart Tom” showed how to access a hidden menu on iPhones that gives a more detailed look at your local signal strength than the traditional bars at the top of your display.
All you have to do is open the keypad and type *3001#12345#*.
Tap the call button and you’ll see an area of the iPhone that you can’t access through the usual settings.
It is actually designed for engineers to get detailed information about the connection of your smartphone.
But it’s still good to have a nose.
While you might not be able to understand most of it, there are some useful parts.
For example, try to find a bit called LTE RSRP, which stands for Reference Signal Received Power.
This shows your true signal strength by providing an accurate measure of your distance from the nearest cell tower.
It usually ranges from -140 to -40, and the closer you are to -40 the better.
This is actually the data used to figure out what your phone’s signal bar is showing.
But most of the other features are for tech-savvy guys and won’t be of much use to anyone else.
In fact, the so-called Field Test Mode has been lurking around for years.
Android owners can find theirs by going to Settings > About phone > Status > SIM status > Signal strength.
Tapsmart Tom’s video has already garnered more than 80,000 views on TikTok.
“This is a really accurate way to find the signal hotspots in your house,” he said.
