The world was treated to the longest partial lunar eclipse in years, with the moon turning red.

The spectacle was captured in a variety of images showing the glowing crimson ball against the dark sky.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth moves between the sun and moon, preventing light from reaching the lunar surface. This means that a bite appears to have been taken from the moon, with part of its surface turning dark.

The light that hits the moon has moved through the earth’s atmosphere. As this light passes us, it scatters and colors it red, so that the moon appears illuminated in a spectacular bloody color.

Photographers from around the world were able to capture this moment as it happened early Friday morning UK time.

Here are some of the best of these images.
