Apple will be hosting another online event this month.

The event will take place on October 18 at 10 a.m. Pacific time or 6 p.m. in the UK. Like all Apple events since the pandemic began, it has taken place online.

The invitation gave no indication of what the event might involve. It only contained the word “Unleashed” and a blue version of the Apple logo.

Apple’s marketing director Greg Joswiak shared a moving version of the same illustration – but it also revealed little about what might actually be announced.

But it is almost certain that the main release of the event will be new versions of the Mac. You will likely be adding Apple’s own chips to at least some of its more powerful computers.

Apple announced last June that it would switch all of its computers to its own processors within two years. The first Macs with Apple Silicon hit the market last November – in the form of a new MacBook Pro, Air, and Mac Mini, all of which included the M1 chip – and this summer came the new 24-inch iMac with the same processor.

But that leaves the performance-oriented computers – like the larger MacBook Pros and the Mac Pro – still without access to the huge performance gains that Apple Silicon brings. Rumors have been circulating for months that a new, more powerful version of the chip would allow at least some of these computers to switch from Intel this year.

The results of this work will probably be presented at the “Unleashed” event. Rumor has it that Apple will unveil a new 14-inch and 16-inch version of the MacBook Pro, which may also include the line’s first redesign in years.

Aside from the processor change, reports have suggested that the new MacBooks could bring a number of long-awaited improvements, such as the reintroduction of the MagSafe store and the revitalization of previously removed ports like HDMI and the SD card slot.

Apple could also finally announce the updated version of the AirPods. You’ll be borrowing some of the design from the AirPods Pro – including their smaller stems – but putting them in a cheaper package, rumors have suggested.

These are likely to be the top announcements, not least because most of the rest of the Apple line-up has recently been updated. At an event last month, new iPhones, iPads, and the Apple Watch Series 7 were released, which goes on sale on Friday.

The launch date is especially noteworthy because it is a Monday, which is very unusual for an Apple event. The company may have chosen to schedule it ahead of a Google event the next day, the 19th, to showcase the new Pixel phones.
