Max Verstappen has received a € 50,000 (£ 42,681) fine for touching rival Lewis Hamilton’s car after qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Verstappen was called to the stewards office in the Interlagos paddock.

The fate of Lewis Hamilton remains unclear after he allegedly committed a technical defect on his Mercedes.

The FIA’s verdict will be announced before today’s sprint race, which starts at 4.30pm (7.30pm UK).

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said that Verstappen’s behavior had become commonplace.

“I think, as we’ve seen with many, many drivers, they sometimes look around to see what’s going on with the other cars. That was all, a little bit of curiosity. Nothing more, ”he told Sky Sports TV.

“We let drivers pull on our clutch paddles, have heads in cockpits, test front wings, push tires, let cars roll around. It’s not unusual. It has never been addressed or even discussed before.

“Mercedes’s straight-line stability is of course very impressive. I think maybe he’s just looking at this. Drivers are very curious animals sometimes, aren’t they? We have seen that many, many times. “
