Ayling is sent off for a two-footed challenge against Gabriel Martinelli while Leeds lag behind at Arsenal

After witnessing Ayling’s two-footed stud attack near the corner flag, Adam Smith said it “has no place in football these days” although referee Chris Kavanagh initially only showed a yellow card.

Leeds enjoyed a nightmare start at Arsenal on Sunday, conceding twice in the first 10 minutes before Luke Ayling was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Martinelli had attempted to smash the ball through Ayling’s legs but the resulting challenge provoked an angry reaction from the forward’s Arsenal team-mates.

In turn, Raphinha was booked for protesting too loudly in Ayling’s defense and subsequently had to be held back by Diego Llorente to prevent Leeds from falling down to nine men.

Leeds set a new Premier League record for yellow cards and within minutes their afternoon unbelievably worsened as Everton’s goal at Leicester gave the Toffees a 2-1 lead.

At the time of writing, this saw Jesse Marsch’s side plunge back into the relegation zone.

“He jumped his feet in two,” Smith added after checking Ayling’s red card.

“He was upset that the flag wasn’t raised. You can’t go in like that these days. He doesn’t get the ball. Martinelli hits him through the legs.

“He was upset about something, Ayling. I don’t know if he thought Martinelli was offside. It seems pretty clear to me.”
