England captain Ben Stokes sat in training on Tuesday, 48 hours before the start of the Headingley Test.

Stokes was notable for his absence as the rest of the squad began preparations for the LV= Insurance Series final against New Zealand after feeling unwell.

A spokesman for the England and Wales Cricket Board said Stokes had tested negative for Covid in the morning.

New Zealand have had several positive cases in their squad in recent weeks, including Stokes’ counterpart Kane Williamson on the eve of the second Test.

As well as Williamson, the tourists have seen Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell and two members of their backroom squad have enjoyed positive results since arriving in England, although all four players are fit and available to play this week.

An ECB spokesman suggested Stokes would be kept away from the group as a precautionary measure and reassessed ahead of Wednesday’s net meeting.
