Spencer Dinwiddie sounds Luka in “Storylines” as the Mavericks hunt for upgrades

Whether the Dallas Mavericks need to update the roster depends on who you ask. According to some, the team could add some new talent to the roster, including a legitimate All-Star running mate for Luka Doncic, reflected in Dallas’ stance as one of the league’s clear “buyers” ahead of the trade deadline.

But according to Spencer Dinwiddie, the Mavs’ need for a Luka co-star is just a media story that’s not necessarily rooted in reality.

“You guys work in media, and you know storylines are king, right?” So we have a 23-year-old scholar — it’s very easy to say [‘Luka needs help’]. Lukas is incredible, he was the prodigy from the start. So it will always be because his star power is so much further than ours. And in many ways it makes the game easier for us. That’s why you sometimes have to deal with some media reactions off the pitch,” Dinwiddie explained to dem Dallas morning news recently.

Dinwiddie went on to blow his own horn a bit to remind fans of his own talent.

“The 5-foot-4 guy who sits on his couch and says I’m a bum or whatever… Listen, I want you to be a fan, I want you to buy jerseys and invest. But like, I averaged 20 points before. That won’t upset me. It’s part of the game.”

While Dinwiddie may not believe the Mavericks need to find an all-star partner for Luka, that doesn’t mean the team won’t be busy before the trade deadline.

Right now, Doncic is doing everything for Dallas, who is ranked fifth in a crowded Western Conference. And according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, he wants the team to take steps to improve before the trade deadline.

“Sources say Doncic, who has shown no desire to interfere in personnel matters in the past, has been very keen on wanting the Mavs to upgrade before the Feb. 9 trade deadline,” MacMahon wrote last week.

Doncic has never given any outward hints that he’s dissatisfied with Dallas’ roster or that he wants improvements.

Shortly after the report, MacMahon followed up with another report: that he was obviously wrong.

“Mark Cuban denies that Luka Doncic has indicated he would like the roster updated before the trade deadline.

“Cuban: ‘Tim MacMahon was dead wrong. Luka has never suggested, asked, demanded or discussed any changes to the squad. MacMahon tweeted.

Nonetheless, reports suggest the Mavericks will be among a number of teams set to be buyers over the next few weeks.

There is no time like the present. With the Mavericks’ playoff hopes seemingly hinged on Doncic’s ability to lift the team and demolish a hot streak, Dallas should look for ways to achieve a higher level of consistency.

According to Fox Sports’ Ric Bucher, they are doing just that. The Mavs, along with the Warriors and Bucks, appear to be pre-close buyers.

“A sample of GMs, scouts and front-office executives identified the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks as interested buyers in the trade market looking to add a proven player or two to complement their star-studded core and to improve their chances of winning the championship title in June,” Bucher wrote.

The Mavericks are likely eyeing defensive upgrades in hopes of making up for Dallas’ so-so defensive rating.
