Sergio Agüero scored his first goal for Barcelona on Wednesday in a specially arranged friendly behind closed doors at the Ciutat Esportiva training ground.

The Argentine international scored in the 2-2 draw against third division Cornella from close range, as the club’s Twitter account shows.

Agüero is still waiting for his official debut for Barcelona since joining Camp Nou on a free transfer this summer after his contract with Premier League champions Manchester City expired. The striker suffered a calf injury in the preseason, which meant that he missed the start of the new 2021/22 season

According to Diario Sport’s Toni Juanmarti, Aguero played Cornella for 30 minutes as he was recovering from his injury. The 33-year-old could finally make his Barca debut on Sunday when Valencia visit the Camp Nou in La Liga.

The Argentine started as part of a strong starting XI that also included Ansu Fati, Clement Lenglet, Riqui Puig and Jordi Alba. Ousmane Dembele was not used, although he returned to training with Aguero at the beginning of the week.

Coach Ronald Koeman started his squad in a 3-5-2 formation, which isn’t all that popular with fans, but returned to a back four in the second half of the friendly.

The aim of the game was to give the available players who are not on the road with their national teams a certain rhythm during the current international break.

Philippe Coutinho also scored for Barcelona against Cornella. The Brazilian is fully fit again after missing the second half of last season with a knee injury.

Coutinho has played six games so far in 2021-22 but is struggling to make an impact at Camp Nou and is yet to provide Barcelona with a goal or assist for the competition

There is also speculation about the 29-year-old’s future at Barca. The Premier League club have had serious discussions about the Brazilian, according to Newcastle Christian Falk at SportBild.

Agüero’s return to fitness will fuel a Barca attack that struggled in the first few weeks of the season. Ronald Koeman’s side have not scored a goal in their last two games and have only scored 11 goals in seven league games.

Injuries to Aguero, Ansu Fati and Martin Braithwaite didn’t help Barca’s cause, especially after the Catalans bid farewell to Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann in the summer transfer window.

However, the Catalans have been strengthened by the return of exciting teenager Fati after a 10 month hiatus with a knee injury. The striker scored a goal on his comeback in a 3-0 win over Levante and made two more appearances.

Fati could make his first start since November 2020 against Valencia on Sunday and already knows everything about the goal against Los Che. The teenager scored and assisted in his first Barca start against Valencia and played a major role in the 5-2 win in September 2019.
