Roger Penske addressed one of the biggest questions of the season. He has told NASCAR Cup Series fans to “tune” Joey Logano’s contract extension with Team Penske.

Penske made the comments to NBC Sports ahead of race weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He wondered about the No. 22 driver and the possibility of signing Kyle Busch. Penske urged fans to “stay up to date” on Logano’s contract, before adding, “I’d say I’m smiling,” for added reassurance.

Logano is currently under contract with Team Penske until the end of the 2023 season. He will return to Team Penske Ford Mustang #22 for at least one more campaign, but the team has been vocal about their plans to keep him for much longer.

Team Penske has already dealt with the biggest hurdle that would disrupt a potential deal. The Cup Series organization signed a massive renewal with Equilon Enterprises LLC (d/b/a Shell Oil Products US) and Pennzoil-Quaker State Company, both serving as main sponsors of Logano.

Logano started the 2022 season with at least one win in 10 consecutive Cup Series seasons. He had 27 overall, and he had a goal to add more and secure a championship fourth spot in another straight season.

Logano did just that, despite showing some inconsistent performances. He first reached Victory Lane at Darlington Raceway, having outmaneuvered William Byron. This race punched his ticket to the playoffs.

Logano then won for the second time at the World Wide Technology Raceway, capturing another newcomer to the Cup Series schedule. That second win ensured he would be in the playoffs even if more than 16 drivers won in the regular season.

After the first 21 races of the 2022 season, Logano is now in seventh place in the table. He is well above the playoff cutline and has an opportunity to add more points to his total before the playoffs begin. At some point in the near future he will also sign a contract that will keep him in the #22 Ford for a considerable time.

Penske remains focused on getting all three of his drivers into the playoffs, but there are a few other issues he needs to address. The team owner wondered if he would bring Kyle Busch into the building.

The short answer is no. Penske stated that the team remains happy with the drivers in the building. He also mentioned that Team Penske supports Wood Brothers Racing and the #21 car. Though Penske didn’t completely end the idea of adding Busch. “We’ll wait and see,” he said of the two-time champion’s contract situation.

“Today we really have four cars that we have an interest in,” explained Penske. “We support the Wood Brothers and of course Harrison [Burton]. We’re full of riders and we’re happy with the guys we have there. They are young and ready to go and I think our sponsors are wholeheartedly on our side.”
