It wasn’t long before disgruntled San Francisco 49ers star Deebo Samuel was linked with the Dallas Cowboys, but the receiver played a role in fueling those rumors. Shortly after reports surfaced that Samuel had requested a swap, the playmaker liked a tweet in which he wore a Cowboys uniform alongside CeeDee Lamb.

“Man you look great in blue and silver with a star on your helmet! @19promblemz,” Twitter user @Shane_2104 said in the tweet, liking and tagging Samuel.

Samuel hasn’t liked the tweet since, but the wideout would clearly welcome a Dallas trade. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported on April 20, 2022 that the wideout “asked the 49ers to trade him.”

“Breaking news: I just spoke to wide receiver Deebo Samuel — and he told me he asked the 49ers to trade him,” Darlington tweeted. “He didn’t want to discuss specific reasons for his request, but he has indeed communicated to the 49ers his desire to leave the organization. There’s more to come.”

Here’s a look at the tweet that’s got Cowboys fans buzzing.

Corresponding NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Samuel is not only looking for a new contract but is frustrated with his commitment to the Niners. Rapoport reported that Samuel’s trade request came “more than a week ago.”

“The trade request was received more than a week ago, and the 49ers have been aware of Deebo’s feelings for some time,” Rapoport said in a series of April 20 tweets. “That’s why there were no talks. The 49ers have tried making offers for a long-term contract for WR Deebo Samuel, but he hasn’t been willing to commit. That’s why. Unclear where this is leading. But Samuel wanting out is the latest in big WR drama. Money isn’t the root of Deebo Samuel’s problems, otherwise that could be fixed with a big offer. But there are also problems with how it is used.”

Samuel later broke his silence on the trade request Delete the tweet.

“The job of reporters is to write stories that only people know the truth about the situation is 49ers @ToryDandy [agent] and Deebo Samuel,” Samuel said in the now-deleted tweet.

Samuel was one of the top NFL receivers last season with 77 catches for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns in 16 appearances, earning him an All-Pro nomination. One of the points of contention seems to be Samuel’s use in the running game, as the playmaker also had 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns.

This isn’t the first time a star player has expressed an interest in the Cowboys, and more often than not the person doesn’t end up in Dallas. The Samuel rumors are intriguing as the Cowboys now have a hole the size of Amari Cooper at the receiver. But would the Cowboys be willing to trade substantial draft capital for Samuel and give the receiver a lucrative long-term contract extension?

Samuel is entering the final season of his four-year, $7.2 million rookie deal and is expected to have a salary of $3.9 million in 2022. The Cowboys have insisted that trading Cooper was as much about fulfilling his contract as his $20 million annual salary. With star recipients now making $30 million a year, the odds of Dallas trading for Samuel remain slim given their current salary cap issues.
