Proposed trade sees Mavericks land Jalen Brunson replacement & 25-year-old wing

This offseason has been tough for the Dallas Mavericks. After reaching the Western Conference Finals last season, they lost one of their key players this summer. Breakout star Jalen Brunson left Dallas, opting to sign with the New York Knicks instead.

Brunson was critical to the Mavericks’ playoff success. Throughout the postseason, Brunson averaged 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 46.6% shots from the field and 34.7% shots from behind the three-point line.

Now the Mavericks will be forced to replace Brunson’s production on the starting lineup. Spencer Dinwiddie is widely expected to balance most of Brunson’s production, but Dallas should still try to take steps to replace him. A trade suggested by Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale would do just that.

Here’s the full synopsis of the proposed deal:

Misfits get: Mike Conley, Malik Beasley

Obtain Jazz: Tim Hardaway Jr., Dwight Powell, Josh Green, 2025 1st-Round Pick (Top-One Protected)

This deal would result in the Mavericks adding some much-needed reinforcements while the Jazz would continue to reshuffle their roster around star guard Donovan Mitchell. Favale explained both sides in his article.

According to Favale, this trade would help the Mavericks continue to field a competitive team around Luka Doncic. He admitted Dallas could hope to get a year of recovery from Hardaway Jr., but this trade would outweigh that possibility.

“Dallas could be looking for a renaissance from THJ after his left foot injury. But jettisoning him in favor of Beasley and Conley makes too much sense,” Favale wrote.

Favale also noted that Conley and Beasley would be a good match for Doncic. He stated that Beasley would be a great replacement for Hardaway Jr. but also noted Conley’s solid fit alongside Doncic in the backcourt.

“Beasley is a reasonable reflection of THJ, with more pop, and his contract can come off the books (team option) next summer,” Favale said. “People may have let down 34-year-old Mike Conley considering how his playoffs ended, but he was really good in the regular season and he can play alongside Doncic.”

Meanwhile, Favale said this trade would help fill some areas of jazz’s needs.

For the Jazz, Favale said this trade would help them round out the list. They need wings and a new big man, and this deal would help add both to their list.

“Utah is in dire need of wings and both Green and THJ are qualifying given the circumstances,” Favale wrote. “They could also use another big one that Powell’s expiring contract offers and further charging the draft pick coffers makes them dangerous in future trade talks.”

As the Jazz continue to build their roster, any trade adding a first-round pick could be worthwhile, and this deal would earn them a pick while adding useful parts.

Green is a nice young play to take a chance on, Hardaway Jr. could help out on the wing, and Powell would help improve their big man rotation. Both teams would benefit from a trade like this.
