Germany was the first nation in the world to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The planning is already in progress. DFB director Oliver Bierhoff announced that there will be an innovation in the desert state.

Usually, the DFB travels to training camps before World Cups in order to prepare intensively for the tournament. In 2018, 2014 and 2010, the entourage around ex-national coach Joachim Löw decided to go to South Tyrol. The DFB team spent around two weeks preparing for the tournaments in the small town of Eppan (around 15,000 inhabitants). There will be no such training camp in 2022.

The reason for this lies in the tight schedule. The last Bundesliga matchday before the World Cup ends on November 13, 2022 (Sunday). The tournament in Qatar starts on November 21st. DFB director Oliver Bierhoff therefore wants to use the eight days in between differently. He told the “kicker”: “If so, there can only be a short stay to acclimatize, there is too little time for an actual training camp.” The 53-year-old is therefore rescheduling: “During this time we will definitely be playing a test match.”

Furthermore, Bierhoff still has to clarify the question of a World Cup location. A solution should be found in spring 2022 at the latest: “I was in Qatar a long time ago to take a look at the local conditions, as did team manager Thomas Beheshti. We will travel to Qatar again this year and get a final picture After the draw in April we can fine-tune it. “

It has also not yet been decided which region of the country to go to: “There is still no clear trend, we need to gather more information beforehand. We are looking for an area where we feel comfortable and have good logistics. The search is easier because the country is comparatively small and, unlike in Brazil, there are no different climatic zones. “

A fact that Bierhoff is right about. Brazil’s area is approximately 736 times larger than that of Qatar. The desert state is half the size of the German state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. After all, this shortens the travel times for the DFB selection to the World Cup games.
