Pochettino, known as a team builder, would do well to choose his next project carefully but there will be plenty of leaders in England who would welcome his application
Ego battered for leaving the Parc de Princes a year before his contract expired, Pochettino’s record includes a league and cup double and a deeper entry into the Champions League than any other manager has held the reins in France handed over the capital.
Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain is bound to cause division.
This is offset by accusations that he failed to draw up a roster that includes three of the best attacking talents of their generation. This was a team built to conquer Europe, not compete for national honor.
Pochettino might not have been the man best suited for a role that supports such gargantuan egos. This team builder is best advised to choose their new challenge carefully.
So where could that be?
There was a time when juventus studied his credentials but his next target will almost certainly be the Premier League, a league that Pochettino has been fascinated by and where he has successfully improved two clubs in Tottenham and Southampton.
The problem for the Argentine is that he could be forced to take a step back to climb back up to the elite tier of management, where your shares can rise quickly but the market is volatile.
See, for example, the movement of many against his appointment Manchester United Supporters who saw his time in France as a failure. It was certainly a harsh assessment, but when he switched for Erik ten Hag instead – the popular choice among the Old Trafford public – it was confirmed his reputation had been tarnished.
What’s left for him in England? Chelsea were once very interested and although Thomas Tuchel steered the ship impressively through choppy waters last season, there is a trend for new owners to eventually move for their own men.
Tuchel, who has restored his own reputation after leaving PSG, will be more than aware of it.
Perhaps he is addressing owners who have a “project”. Eddie Howe is well remembered and impressed at Newcastle so that road is likely to be closed.
But somewhere like aston villawhere Steven Gerrard has been heavily backed but not yet fully capitalized with results and moves up the table could be the right move if circumstances conspire.
A World Cup in the middle of the season could also make him think. Argentina Travel to Qatar as one of the tournament favorites and Lionel Scaloni’s position could be in jeopardy if they don’t capitalize on the talent at his disposal. That job would certainly be from Pochettino if he wanted it.
Or what about England? Gareth Southgate says he will not overstay his reception; Pochettino certainly offers a more expansive alternative than the current Three Lions manager.
Wherever he ends up, Pochettino’s presence in the managerial job market is increasing the pressure on everyone next season. There will be no shortage of offers.
