Patriots duo described as “massively overrated”

It’s crazy to think that a player as calm as New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones can be as polarizing, but it’s true. Jones pulls out boisterous and sometimes exaggerated praise.

On the other hand, there is a contingent of people who believe Jones is overrated. In fact, in a recent episode of Heavy Presents I’m Just Saying, Jets defeated writer Paul Esden Jr. and dubbed Jones the “most massively overrated” gamer of the Patriots. Jones wasn’t the only Patriots player to be overrated by the IJS panel. 49ers beat writer Lorenzo Reyna has focused on the Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne.

Esden did not hold back from tearing Jones apart:

Reyna knows Bourne well as someone who covers the 49ers, but maybe his expectations are too high.

Yes, this will probably come as a surprise and for several reasons. Bourne wasn’t having a bad season. In 11 games, the former 49ers receiver has 37 receptions for 562 yards and 3 TDs. Those aren’t exactly Pro Bowl numbers, but I’m not sure anyone expected Bourne to snap over 100 catches, 1,000 yards, and 10 TDs.

In my expectation, Bourne was what we thought, which is more good than bad.

Perhaps the biggest argument for expansion that arises from this segment is that of Esden. Is Jones Really Overrated?

I would say in part, but not as much as Esden thinks. Jones has thrown 2,540 yards, 14 TDs, 8 INTs and completed 70% of his passes. Those numbers are strong for a rookie QB, and there’s every reason to believe Jones will do even better in his sophomore season.

However, some of the praise he receives is a bit premature. The Brady comparisons might prove to be worthwhile over the next several years, but Esden is right, the 18-year-old comment is a bit of an exaggeration.

In terms of Aikman, we just call it exaggeration.
