The Miami Heat have been linked with a number of players this offseason. They were not able to get Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell through the trade, although they were known to be interested. They were rumored to be interested in LaMarcus Aldridge and even taking on Jae Crowder for a reunion with the former Heat starter. However, Crowder isn’t the only Heat fan favorite to rejoin the franchise. After a social media post by Jimmy Butler went viral, fans are clamoring for a reunion with another former Heat big-man.

Jimmy Butler posted a picture on his Instagram story with former Heat player Kelly Olynyk, showing the two going out for dinner. The photo was quickly screengrabbed and shared on Twitter Brady Hawk with the apt caption, “Jimmy’s back recruiting whales out here with that hole at 4.” The photo was shared with Butler’s 7.4 million Instagram followers.

Brady Hawk noted that Butler may be recruiting Olynyk to fill the hole in the power forward position left by PJ Tucker’s departure to the Philadelphia 76ers. Olynyk played for the Miami Heat for three and a half seasons, averaging an impressive 10 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in his best season at South Beach.

Olynyk was also a good match for Bam Adebayo defensively. Suddenly the duo was ranked first among 101 2-man lineups who played at least 250 minutes of NBA basketball in a month. While the two once combined into a solid defensive lineup, Olynyk is certainly not the fullback that Tucker is, or even another former Heat player linked to the Heat in Jae Crowder.

It’s important to note that Olynyk is currently signed to the Detroit Pistons and as such a move remains unlikely unless Heat trades for the veteran three-pointer. However, even if he were a free agent, the Heat would not be able to sign him for salary cap and luxury tax reasons.

Earlier this offseason, Heat beat writer and reporter Ira Winderman was asked by the Sun Sentinel about the potential for the Heat to re-sign their veteran forward Markieff Morris after struggling with injuries all of last season, and Winderman reported that all heat moves are based on Udonis Haslem’s status.

“Q: Is the door still open for Markieff Morris? -Ted.

A: That’s due to Udonis Haslem. If Haslem returns for a 20th Heat season, he will occupy the Heat’s 14th standard roster spot, putting the Heat too close to luxury tax to add another player. At this point, Haslem basically controls whether the door is open to anyone, barring a trade that sends more players than are brought in. Winderman wrote.

Haslem eventually signed on to return to South Beach for his twentieth NBA season, a goal of his, and solidified the Heat’s roster unless they strike a deal to bring in other players, but the move indicated it would that the team will take it up again next season.
