Max Verstappen is looking to underscore his dominance from pole position at tonight’s Canadian Grand Prix, with testing conditions throwing another interesting wrinkle as he seeks a second World Championship title. The Red Bull driver was untouchable in the rain as mistakes and mechanical issues pelted the parade of his closest challengers.

At the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, Fernando Alonso secured second place in qualifying for Alpine, Carlos Sainz started third for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton is back at the top of the grid with the seventh despite his very public complaints about the condition of the Mercedes W13 car Feldes-time world champion with fourth place for the silver arrows. The Haas team also deserves special praise, occupying the third row of the grid thanks to Kevin Magnussen in fifth and Mick Schumacher in sixth.

Don’t expect Alonso to play it safe from the start today, which in the absence of lights makes for an intriguing prospect: “The aim is to lead the race on lap one. Turn One, maximum attack. And after that they can go and fight – but it will be nice and sweet to lead the race.” While Verstappen added: “Fernando is getting a bit old but he’s still very fast,” said Verstappen. “So I know he’s starting very well, so I have to be ready. Being in the front row with Fernando; As a little kid I watched Formula 1, saw Fernando up there, won his races and championships and got on pole. So it’s a nice thing to share the front row.” Follow the latest updates as we prepare for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix:
