England meet Hungary in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday night, looking to lift themselves from the bottom of the group after a disappointing end to the season. The Three Lions suffered a surprise setback against the same opponents ten days ago, on a night when the hosts controversially allowed tens of thousands of schoolchildren to attend a game that was supposed to be held behind closed doors.
Since then, Gareth Southgate’s side have held two draws: 1-1 with Germany thanks to a late Harry Kane penalty that gave the striker the 50th milestone in an England shirt, then a very memorable goalless draw with Italy over the weekend.
While preparation for the Fifa World Cup will of course be the priority for the head coach and his staff, the players’ performances in those games could be enough to push them to the front of the queue to travel to Qatar. Southgate has already hinted that by then the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho could struggle to rejoin the squad, although of course three months of Premier League action could determine a lot about form and fitness.
