The Las Vegas Raiders will grapple with an unprecedented problem as head coach Jon Gruden was forced to resign on Monday after a litany of controversial emails leaked from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. The team is 3-2 and just one game away from the top of AFC West. With a matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Raiders players can’t afford the luxury of hanging their heads right now.

The players were largely silent on the Gruden scandal when the front office and coaching team got mixed up, but three of the team’s captains decided to speak out on Wednesday. The first to look into the matter was quarterback Derek Carr, who was clearly emotional about the whole situation.

“Lots of emotions, obviously not seeing everything coming,” said Carr on Wednesday. “I don’t think either of us did it, it surprised us all. There will be a day and time for all of these feelings, but emotionally, I have a job to do and that has never changed. No matter who the coach is, no matter who is on the team with me. I have a job to do and that is to lead these men. Right now, more than ever, they need a leader. “

Carr didn’t follow the trainer too much, but had a major problem with the language used in the emails.

“You all know me, I don’t tolerate that kind of talk, I don’t talk like that. My kids will never talk like that, ”said Carr. “It’s hard because I love the man so much. I have family members who have done things, I’ve done things, and I’m glad I’m still loved. I think more than anything [Gruden] needs people to help him. To love him. In all areas that we can. But at the same time what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong. “

The relationship between Gruden and Carr has been the focus of the Raiders for years. Last season the two felt completely in sync for the first time, and Carr has played some of the best football of his career. All of these advances are now going up in smoke as the quarterback has to adjust to whoever becomes his coach in the future.

It would be easy for players to pile up Gruden now. This scandal could derail a previously promising season. The Raiders players aren’t ready to go after Gruden too hard, however. Star tight end Darren Waller would prefer to help the coach than kick him while he’s on the ground.

“I want to give someone mercy and allow them to learn from what they may have done and I’m trying to do that for the coach,” said Waller

Waller has faced much more serious adversity throughout his career, but there’s no doubt that development still hurts. Gruden was the Raiders and was a big reason Waller became a superstar in the NFL. Unfortunately, the coach’s personal prejudices could have derailed his football career.

Gruden was all about insult and that was no secret. He let the defense do their thing while he focused on writing plays and working with the quarterbacks. Even so, he was still respected by players in defense. We’ve already seen cornerback Trayvon Mullen and linebacker KJ Wright support Gruden.

Defensive end Maxx Crosby did not go into the gist of what the coach actually said, but did express the difficult situation the team got into.

“As the leader on this team, the last 48 hours have been tough,” said Crosby. “It’s not like that at the end of the season, we have 12 games left.”

The season doesn’t end for the Raiders and they have to keep chugging. This is one of the toughest situations a team can get into during a season. How the raiders react will be shown on Sunday.
