If you’ve seen the Chicago Bulls this season, you’ve undoubtedly seen DeMar DeRozan play at MVP level. You’ve probably also noticed the large and expertly crafted tribute tattoo on his left shoulder.

The tattoo is a portrait of DeRozan’s late father Frank, and it’s one of those perfect examples of ink with substance. DeRozan recently spoke to Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated and explained the inspiration behind the tattoo.

“It’s just a constant reminder every time I go out and play that he could be seen. I wouldn’t do that without him, so I owe him everything. “

DeRozan’s father died on February 19, but DeRozan still carries the lessons he learned from his father. DeRozan added:

Work ethic and dedication have translated into DeRozan’s consistency, longevity and success throughout his career. DeRozan is at a point where he may not need to let off another middle-range shot, and he could still get into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Is DeRozan a Hall of Famer without a doubt?

It’s hard to say definitively, but if he added an MVP award to his list of achievements this season it would be a lot harder to turn down.

DeRozan is still only 32 years old and has 3-5 years left to play in the league. He has always taken good care of himself and has never played less than 60 games in his 13-year career.

If you look at just the scoring, DeRozan already has a decent case. He recently dwarfed 18,000 points in his career. This puts him ahead of some current Hall of Famers such as Chris Mullin, Chris Bosh, Steve Nash and Lenny Wilkens. Before the end of the season, DeRozan is likely to overtake five more HOFers on the all-time scoring list: Dave Bing, Julius Erving, Tracy McGrady, Rick Barry and Dolph Schayes.

Still, the plight of players like Mark Aguirre, who is not in the Hall of Fame, could suggest DeRozan won’t make it. Chicago hopes DeRozan can win MVP and an NBA championship to clear all doubts.

Aside from DeRozan being a second high performing scorer, the biggest advantage DeRozan can have for Zach LaVine is more intangible. LaVine is one of the most physically gifted players the league has ever seen, but he has to keep learning how to win.

DeRozan’s controlled and lethal approach on the offensive could be perfect to help LaVine take the next step. We can clearly see where DeRozan learned his leadership skills.
