Barcelona plan to hand over a new deal to exciting 17-year-old midfielder Pablo Paez Gavira, better known as Gavi, and will raise their release clause from € 50m to € 500m.

According to Catalunya Radio, extending the youngster should be an “absolute priority” for the club and keep Gavi at the Camp Nou with a higher salary until 2026.

The teenager has broken into the first team in breathtaking style this season at Camp Nou and has already played 16 games in all competitions for the Catalan giants in 2021/22.

Despite his tender years, Gavi has also become an important player for Spain on an international level. The midfielder became La Rojas’ youngest ever player when he made his UEFA Nations League debut against Italy and made four appearances under coach Luis Enrique.

Barca appear determined to secure the future of their talented young players despite ongoing financial troubles. Both Pedri and Ansu Fati have extended this season with release clauses of an impressive € 1 billion.

Former Barca coach Ronald Koeman made his first-team debut at Barca for Gavi against Getafe in La Liga in August 2021, before being replaced by Xavi as coach at Camp Nou.

The club legend’s return offers Gavi the chance to work under one of the greatest midfielders to add value to the game and the first signs that he will thrive.

Gavi started both of Xavi’s first two games as responsible and put in a very impressive statistic in the goalless draw against Benfica in the Champions League, as Opta points out.

Gavi is one of the many exciting young midfielders available to Xavi alongside Nico Gonzalez, Pedri, Riqui Puig and Frenkie de Jong.

Gavi’s appearance this season was a welcome surprise but has already sparked interest from other clubs.

The reigning European champions Chelsea are keen on the 17-year-old, as Diario Sport reports. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is said to be “ready” to pay Gavi’s current € 50m release clause.

Barca’s troubled financial situation could leave the club vulnerable to offers on their key talent as rivals are able to offer higher salaries than those currently on offer at Camp Nou.

Barca’s desire to secure Gavi’s long-term future, however, underscores the confidence they have in the youngster and should stave off potential admirers while the teen is likely not interested in an exit either

Gavi “already knows that his future lies in Barcelona,” despite its links to Stamford Bridge, according to Diario Sport’s José María Casanovas. Manager Xavi has already made it clear how high he rates the teenager, as reported by Diario AS.

“He’s a guy with so much talent,” he said in October 2021. “What surprises me the most is that he’s only 17 years old and competes like a 30-year-old. Already at the age of 17 he shows that he can keep up at the highest level. It’s incredible. Technically he is very good and he also has the physical characteristics to be successful. He has everything to be successful and has a great future ahead of him. “
