Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed suggestions that Vladimir Putin’s Russian army is deploying a new laser weapon, comparing the claims to those of the Nazis
Volodymyr Zelenskyy mocked Vladimir Putin after Russia claimed it was using a new laser weapon capable of destroying drones and blind satellites.
The Ukrainian president laughed at the proposals regarding the new Peresvet weapons system, comparing Russia’s claims to similar claims made by the Nazis during World War II.
Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said the new weapon had been successfully tested after destroying a drone from 3 miles away.
He added that it could disable satellites as high as 1,500 km.
Zelenskyy dismissed these claims in a video speech last night, Der Spiegel reports.
He said: “The more it became clear that they had no chance in the war, the more propaganda there was about an amazing weapon that would be so powerful as to ensure a turning point.
“And so we see that in the third month of an all-out war, Russia is trying to find its ‘silver bullet’…all this clearly demonstrates the utter failure of the mission.”
The Nazis, too, unveiled so-called miracle weapons towards the end of World War II, when they were on the verge of defeat.
Russia’s new Peresvet laser weapon system was named after the Russian Orthodox monk Alexander Peresvet, who died in single combat at the beginning of the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380.
Borisov, whom Putin has put in charge of Russia’s military development, claimed on Wednesday (May 18): “It’s already being supplied en masse to the troops.
“It can blind all satellite reconnaissance systems of a likely enemy in orbits up to 1,500 km and disable them in flight through the use of laser radiation.
“But this is, shall we say, from today or even from yesterday: our physicists have now created and practically mass-produced laser systems that are an order of magnitude more powerful and capable of thermally destroying various devices .

“Today, so-called weapon systems based on new physical principles are on the way.
“This is primarily a laser weapon, a broadband electromagnetic weapon that is being replaced [conventional weapons] in the next decade – this is not an exotic idea; it is the reality.”
