The 50-year-old, who completed the Xin’anjiang Marathon near Shanghai last week, relied on an old habit and finished the race in under three and a half hours.
Finishing 574th out of more than 1,500 participants, pictures went viral on social media site Weibo after race organizers posted pictures of his performance.
It’s not the first time Chen has been pictured chain-smoking on his way to the finish line, having previously run at the 2018 Guangzhou Marathon and the 2019 Xiamen Marathon.
Local media reported that Chen only smokes when he runs.
Dubbed the “smoking brother” in running circles, he is perhaps the fastest runner to finish a race chain-smoking.
