Nov. 15 (News) – A mysterious metal box that washed up on a Florida beach could be an old ballast tank from a ship, officials said.

Visitors to Playalinda Beach in Brevard County said they first noticed the large, rusted object on No. 7 Boardwalk on Friday.

“It looks like some kind of oil barrel, a big drum,” witness Tom O’Shea told WKMG-TV.

Kristen Kneifl, resource manager for Canaveral National Seashore, said officials weren’t sure what the object is, but it may once have served as a ship’s ballast tank – a compartment that holds water to stabilize the ship.

“That is currently our best guess,” said Kneifl.

Kneifl said officials noted the 20-foot crate is empty so it does not pose a health risk to the public. She said the officers are still working on a plan to remove the object.

“Unlike maybe some boats or other things that wash up where we can saw them up with a chainsaw and take them down one of our promenades, it doesn’t look like it can be cut up,” said Kneifl. “So it has to be removed from the water, from the ocean.”
