The war on I-4 is back as USF takes on UCF on Friday and the two programs go in opposite directions. UCF is aiming for a fifth straight win in the series and enters the matchup with a 7-4 record.

UCF bounced back from a loss to SMU with a 49-17 pound from Connecticut last time. The Knights reached 537 yards of attack, 257 of which came through the air. Quarterback Mikey Keene – staring in place of the injured Dillon Gabriel – scored 208 yards and two touchdowns. Gabriel goes back, but it looks like Keene is going to make another start.

“If you look at Mikey (Keene), this will be his ninth game. I think he played his best game last week. He improves every game. You saw him sit down on the floor. This really is a game changer for us as it goes forward. I think he’s doing a great job guiding us, ”said UCF coach Gus Malzahn. “He is 18 years old. He’s a real newbie. First you would ask him a question and he is fine with anything. Now he comes to a point where he says he’s more comfortable with this or that. It’s good. That is growth. That tells you he’s starting to get the big picture. That was really good. “

It is the first rivalry matchup for Malzahn to take over this offseason.

“I’ve heard a lot about it. Ever since I got hired, I’ve heard how important it is to our fan base. I was blessed to be part of rivalry games, ”said Malzahn. “That is also a big one. I look forward to it. I like to train in rivalry games. I know your head coach pretty well. I know your receiver coach. He was with me in Auburn. We know our way around very well. I’m looking forward to playing. “

USF has lost four in a row and seven of the last eight on the way to matchup. The team fired defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer after dropping 45 points against Tulane last week.

“I would like to thank Glenn for all of his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our program and the student-athletes it contains,” USF coach Glenn Scott said in a statement. “He brought a lot to our coaching team and his desire and commitment were undisputed, but in the end I felt that a change was needed if we were to move forward.

UCF is a massive 18.5-point favorite for the matchup, with the total set at 62 points.
