A Conservative MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault and has been told to stay away from Parliament buildings pending the ongoing police investigation.

A spokesman for the government whip office said: “The Chief Whip has requested that the MP in question not visit the House of Parliament while an inquiry is ongoing.

“We will not comment further until the investigation is complete.”

A two-year investigation into the allegations was conducted after they were first reported to police in January 2020, the newspaper reported.

The Metropolitan Police said: “In January 2020, the Met received a report into alleged sex offenses committed between 2002 and 2009. The crimes are said to have happened in London.

“An investigation is underway being led by officers from Central Specialist Crime.

“A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of trust and misconduct in public office.

“He remains in custody.”

It is understood that the MP is a backbencher.
