Positioning in the power struggle: Saxony’s Prime Minister Kretschmer speaks out in favor of Friedrich Merz as the next CDU party leader. With the Union voters, however, someone else is ahead.
When electing the future chairman of the CDU, ex-parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz can count on the support of Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU).
“I think it’s right that Friedrich Merz is now given the chance to shape things in the CDU,” said Kretschmer of “Bild am Sonntag”. According to a survey, MP Norbert Röttgen has the lead, at least among the voters of the Union.
According to an Insa opinion trend for the “Bild”, 35 percent of the supporters of the Röttgen party see the most suitable for the CDU chairmanship. 29 percent are in favor of Merz. The current head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun, who is also running, has twelve percent approval.
