The Kenyan Olympian Agnes Tirop was found stabbed to death

The Kenyan long-distance runner Agnes Jebet Tirop was found dead in her home, Athletics Kenya said on Wednesday.

 

The athletics federation announced the death of the 25-year-old Olympian a statementShe said she was “allegedly stabbed by her husband”.

 

“We are still working to find out more details about her death,” it said.

 

She was found dead Wednesday morning at her home in Iten, about 213 miles northwest of the capital, Nairobi, which police officers from the Eldoret Forensic Unit have now cordoned off, the local Nation news agency reported.

 

“Kenya, thanks to their eye-catching performances on the track, has lost a jewel that was one of the fastest rising athletics giants on the international scene,” said Athletics Kenya.

 

Tirop, who represented her country at the last Summer Olympics in Japan and finished fourth over 5,000 meters, won bronze at the World Championships over 10,000 meters in 2019 and 2017.

 

In addition, last month in Herzogenaurach, Germany, she broke the world record for women only over 10 km with a time of 30 minutes 1 second.

 

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a statement to mourn the death.

 

“It is disturbing, utterly regrettable and very sad that we have lost a young and promising female athlete who, at the young age of 25, brought so much fame to our country through her heroics on the global athletics scene,” he said. “I urge our law enforcement agencies, led by the National Police Service, to track down and arrest the criminals responsible for the murder of Agnes so they can face the full force of the law.”

 

The Kenyan National Police Service has its own statementShe said she had a “warm relationship with the sports hero” and that she would work to find those responsible for her death.

 

“The NPS wants to assure the public a swift and full investigation into this heinous crime,” the department said. “May she rest in eternal peace.”
