Speaking at an international security conference in Bahrain on Saturday, Mr Cleverly said Iranian-supplied weapons threaten security in the Middle East and beyond, pointing to the Iranian-made attack drones being used by Russia to target Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure .
“Arms supplied by Iran threaten the entire region,” the Braintree MP told the Manama Dialogue.
“Today, Iran’s nuclear program is at an all-time high and the regime has been trying to sell Russia the armed drones that are killing civilians in Ukraine.
“As their people demonstrate against decades of oppression, Iran’s rulers are spreading bloodshed and destruction all the way to Kyiv,” he said.
The Foreign Secretary added: “Britain is determined to work with our friends to counter the Iranian threat, ban the smuggling of conventional arms and prevent the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons.”
After attending the conference, Mr. Cleverly will travel to Qatar where he will attend the opening in England World Championship game against Iran.
The encounter comes at a time of heightened tensions with the regime.
Earlier this week, the UK imposed a new round of sanctions on Iranian officials in connection with the crackdown on protests that erupted after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in custody after she was arrested for allegedly following orders The country’s Islamic dress code was not followed.
Meanwhile, MI5 Director-General Ken McCallum has revealed that Iranian secret agents have been targeting people in the UK they see as enemies of the regime.
He said the security service had identified at least 10 such potential threats since January, including “ambitions” to kidnap or even kill.
