David Chou was jailed on one felony count of murder and five felonies of attempted murder, Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a Twitter post.

May 16 (News) – A suspect arrested in connection with a Sunday mass shooting at a church in Orange County, California, has been identified as a 68-year-old Las Vegas man.

Jail records show Chou is being held at the Orange County Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, Calif., on $1 million bail, the Orange County Register reported. He is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Chou was arrested after one person was killed and five others injured in a shooting spree at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, Calif., during an after-service luncheon held by the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church at the joint facility.

Authorities said all those injured in the shooting are expected to survive. The victims included four Asian men, aged 66 to 92, and an 86-year-old Asian woman.

The shooting at the predominantly Asian church service sparked a massive police response a day after a white supremacist opened fire at a grocery store in a black-majority neighborhood of Buffalo, NY

Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Hallock told reporters during a news conference Sunday night that the suspect was overpowered by people in the church who assaulted him and “tied” his legs with an extension cord.

They confiscated at least two firearms from the shooter, he said.

“This group of churchgoers showed what we believe to be extraordinary heroism and courage when they stepped in to stop the suspect,” Hallock said. “They undoubtedly prevented further injuries and deaths.”

It remained unclear what connection Chou had to the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church.

Peggy Huang, a councilwoman from Yorba Linda, California, whose relatives attend the church, told the register none of the churchgoers recognized Chou, although he reportedly told some attendees he had been there before.
