Emily Jean Durden, 19, allegedly admitted she sent the videos and pictures to minors after a parent reported that a substitute teacher may have sent their child the explicit footage

A teacher was arrested for a number of sexual offenses, including showing pornographic pictures to her teenage students.

Emily Jean Durden, 19, has faced indecent liberties with a student in two cases, in three cases of criminal material and in two cases of sexual exploitation of a second-degree minor, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.

Local news broadcaster Fox 46 reports that the now-former Cleveland County substitute teacher was arrested for multiple sexual crimes involving participating North Carolina students aged 13-15.

MPs told the broadcaster that the Crest Middle School Resource Office received allegations from a parent on Nov. 18 that a substitute teacher may have sent inappropriate pictures and videos to their child.

The report sparked an investigation that identified Durden as the teacher who allegedly started conversations and shared sexually explicit material with several minors.

Durden was interviewed and allegedly admitted to sending the videos and pictures to the children. She was then arrested, the MPs said.

She is believed to be the youngest teacher to be charged with these offenses by Cleveland County authorities.

A spokeswoman for the district confirmed to WBTV, however, that Durden met the legal requirements for representation because she was over 18 years old and had graduated from high school.

Assistant Deputy Chief Derwin Briscoe said, “When this was brought to my attention, I questioned it, but I think this is a result of our school system, not just our school system, but all employers who need to find people who are willing to work.

“That is a reason for their age, their work in the school system and their youth.

“Parents should always know what their children are up to, always check their social media accounts and look for people they might be in contact with.”

Preston Messick of Cleveland County told WBTV that he attended Crest Middle School and Crest High School and recognized Durden. He said he was very surprised to hear about the allegations.

Messick said, “It’s really crazy to hear this, especially since I got out of elementary school.

“Parents out there shouldn’t have to worry about their children getting explicit pictures sent from a teacher to other students.”

She was held at the Cleveland County Detention Center on $ 50,000 (£ 37,400) secured bail that she has now released.

The teacher has since been released and is awaiting trial.
