The death toll was unknown early Wednesday as officers continued to clear the building at Sam’s Circle in Chesapeake, a city of about 251,000 about 100 miles southeast of Richmond.
Nov 23 (News) — A gunman opened fire at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia late Tuesday, killing and injuring several people, authorities and officials said.
The alleged shooter was among the dead, the authorities said.
Leo Kosinski, a public information officer with the Chesapeake Police Department, told reporters during a news conference that officers responded to a call for a shooting at the Walmart Supercenter around 10:12 p.m
When officers arrived, they determined an active threat situation was unfolding and took “an active threat response,” he said. The officers then entered the building and found several dead and injured.
Authorities believe there was only one shooter. When asked if the shooter died in a police shootout, Kosinski said, “I don’t think so.”
Kosinski said officers were working to clear the building to locate other potential victims or those in hiding.
The Washington Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said They were on their way to help with the investigation.
The city of Chesapeake had previously confirmed via twitter that there was “an active shooting incident” at Walmart that resulted in multiple deaths.
“I am absolutely heartbroken that America’s latest mass shooting took place tonight at a Walmart in my county in Chesapeake, Virginia,” said Senator Louise Lucas, a Democrat a statement. “I will not rest until we find solutions to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country that has claimed so many lives.”
Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he was “disgusted by reports of another mass shooting”.
The town said A reunion location was set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center for immediate family members or the emergency contacts of anyone who may have been at the Walmart during filming.
