The newborn is a male calf that does not yet have a name. Iggy, one of the zoo’s female Masai giraffes, gave birth to the calf.

May 3 (News) – The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY, has announced the birth of a Maasai giraffe.

Seneca Park Zoo on Monday uploaded footage of the newborn walking in an enclosed area.

The zoo says its Animals of Savanna building, which houses the newborn, will remain closed for now but will open to the public soon.

The calf is the first Maasai giraffe born at Seneca Park Zoo.

“Thank you to the veterinary and animal care staff at Seneca Park Zoo who work tirelessly to ensure the best outcome for Iggy and her calf. The calf is very active and mom is doing great,” said Steve Lacy, Superintendent of Seneca Park Zoo on Facebook.

“Things are progressing as we expect. Mom and baby will continue to be monitored and we’re cautiously optimistic,” Lacy continued.
