A fire has broken out at a petrochemical plant and multiple explosions have been reported, resulting in a massive blaze with emergency services on scene and evacuations taking place

Rescue operations are underway at a petrochemical plant after a fire broke out early Saturday morning (June 18).

Firefighters battle a massive blaze at a petrochemical plant in Shanghai, with the sky lighting up after reports of an explosion.

Evacuations were taking place at the Jinshan District facility after a fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, the fire department reportedly said.

It was not immediately known whether there were any victims of the fire.

The Shanghai Petrochemical Company confirmed that the fire broke out just after 4 a.m. local time and that an emergency response plan was put into action immediately.

There are several areas of the facility that appear to be on fire, while there have been no reports of injuries so far.

It is reported that there were multiple explosions that led to the fires.

Many people took to social media to show the flames sweeping through the chemical plant in the southwest of the city, while residents also said how they felt their homes shake from the force of the blasts.

In a video posted to Twitter by a local outlet, massive fires were seen engulfing part of a sprawling factory and emitting columns of thick black smoke.

People fled the area in the chaos caused by the huge fire, which caused traffic congestion.

Shanghai Fire Protection News reportedly stated, “A fire broke out at the ethylene glycol plant of a petrochemical company on Long’an East Road, Jinshan District, Shanghai.

“After receiving the alarm, the 119 Municipal Command Center quickly dispatched rescue workers, such as from Jinshan and Fengxian, to the chemical industry zone.

“The crews are currently on site fighting the fire.”

After the blaze burned for several hours, the sky over Shanghai now looks black from the clouds of smoke, according to social media videos from the city.
