Vladimir Putin smelled like he’d stepped “out of a special prep bath” into a “staged performance,” according to a former White House aide who met the man himself.

The revelations were made by Dr. Fiona Hill, an expert on Russian politics, in a recent episode of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

Despite her expertise in Russian affairs, Dr. Hill, who has advised several US administrations in the Kremlin, including George W. Bush and Donald Trump, said she encountered some surprises while sitting next to the Russian leader at a meeting between Washington and Moscow officials.

“I noticed that he hasn’t eaten,” she said. “It sounds really bizarre, but I could smell that it was freshly washed.

“It was almost like he stepped out of some sort of prep bath into the moment.

“I just thought, ‘Every element of it is staged. This is a performance’.”

dr Hill also discussed other odd elements of the meeting, adding, “At the time when I was actually working for the US government… I was sitting by [Putin] and I thought ‘why am I sitting next to him?’

“Was it because they thought I was like M (Judi Dench’s character in James Bond)? I channeled my inner fantasies.

“Then I thought, ‘Am I the least likely to stab him with a fork?’

“It turned out to be nothing like that. I was later told by the person sitting on his other side, one of his press people, that it was because I was a “nondescript woman.”

“‘Neither too old nor too young, you’re not extravagantly dressed. You have no cleavage. You’re just kind of there.'”

dr Hill spoke of being so close to Putin that she could have touched him.

She said, “If I had just stretched out my hand very slightly, I would have touched him. He had a finely tailored suit, a small vein throbbed on the side of his face.

“It struck me right away that like the rest of us, he really could have used glasses because he had these huge maps of who’s who and what to say.”

When asked if she was speaking directly to Putin, Dr. Hill: “Not really, no, he’s not a great conversationalist. At the end he stood up and said ‘All the best’.”
