Just a few months ago, Boris Palmer was criticized for making racist statements. Now the state executive of the Greens has officially requested to be expelled from the party. It is not about a one-off misconduct.

The state board of the Greens in Baden-Württemberg has now officially applied for the mayor of Tübingen, Boris Palmer, to be excluded from the party. The 33-page application had been sent to the responsible district arbitration committee of the Greens in Tübingen and Palmer’s lawyer, a spokeswoman for the Southwest Greens announced on Monday in Stuttgart. The Commission must now decide on the timing of the procedure. State chairmen Sandra Detzer and Oliver Hildenbrand declared: “Through his provocations that have been going on for years, Boris Palmer has deliberately and seriously violated the principles and the order of our party.”

This is not about individual cases. “We are dealing with years of history and a long list of calculated slip-ups and staged taboo breaks. Boris Palmer primarily uses the issues of immigration, refugee and human rights policy to get utterance after utterance further from the line of our party remove.” Detzer and Hildenbrand went on to say: “His populist and destructive statements have inflicted serious damage on our party. We have no place for someone who flirts with racism and stirs up resentment.”

At the beginning of May, a party convention of the Greens in Baden-Württemberg decided to initiate party regulatory proceedings against Palmer. The reason for this decision was a Facebook post by Palmer about the former German national soccer player Dennis Aogo, in which the OB uses the so-called N-word. This term is used today to describe a racist term used in Germany for black people. Palmer asserted, however, that his statement was meant ironic.
