Petersburg Animal Welfare and Control officials, along with staff from Petersburg Public Works and the Petersburg Fire Department, reacted when a police officer working at a South Jones Street crime scene reported hearing a kitten crying in a manhole.

June 17 (News) — Virginia authorities rescued a kitten from a manhole using a catching pole and a cellphone that lured the cat out with cat noises.

Animal controller Jessica Calloway attempted to reach the kitten by climbing down two different manholes, but the kitten was easily startled and fled when approached.

Rescuers eventually used a cellphone to play cat sounds, which lured the kitten out of hiding, where Calloway was able to capture it with a trapping rod.

Animal Care and Control said in a Facebook post that Calloway’s “catch of the day” weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces and was “absolutely a keeper.”
