It’s the first time in 42 years that Montreal — who reached the Stanley Cup Finals last season — will pick the first overall pick in the draft. The Canadiens drafted forward Doug Wickenheiser with the top pick in 1980.
May 10 (News) – The Montreal Canadiens secured the #1 pick overall in the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery on Tuesday night.
The Canadiens will also become the first team since 1985 to host the draft and hold the No. 1 pick overall.
“This is a very exciting result for us,” Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes told reporters. “Our fans will be thrilled, I’m sure, especially given that the draft is taking place in Montreal when all that anticipation and excitement is leading in.”
The New Jersey Devils, meanwhile, won the second lottery drawing to pick the second pick this year. It is the third time in the past six years that New Jersey has picked first or second overall.
The Arizona Coyotes picked up the third overall pick while the Seattle Kraken picked up the fourth pick overall. The Philadelphia Flyers won the fifth pick.
The Columbus Blue Jackets (6th), Ottawa Senators (7th), Detroit Red Wings (8th), Buffalo Sabers (9th) and Anaheim Ducks (10th) completed the top 10.
This year’s NHL Draft will take place July 7-8 in Montreal.
