Due to the increasing corona numbers and the threat of overloading the intensive care units, the federal states are reacting: Unvaccinated people have to live with further restrictions there. All information in the news blog.

The corona pandemic has had Germany and the world firmly under control since 2020. The number of new infections is currently high, especially in Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia. Recently, more than 50,000 new infections were reported within a day, in some districts the incidence is already over 1,000. The vaccinations are only progressing slowly. Around 67 percent of the population are currently fully vaccinated.

Unvaccinated people in Baden-Württemberg will be largely excluded from participating in public life from Wednesday. As Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) announced on Tuesday, the country will reach the so-called alert level in the corona pandemic due to the worsening situation in the intensive care units. Only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered will then have access to restaurants and museums as well as to most other public events.

If the number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units exceeds the critical value of 390 on the second working day in a row, the so-called corona alert level automatically comes into force in the southwest. In this case, the Corona Ordinance provides for the 2G rule nationwide, for example in restaurants and museums, at exhibitions and in most other public events. Anyone who is not vaccinated and can only show one test is left out in the cinema, in the swimming pool or in the fitness studio, in adult education courses and music schools. Schoolchildren have to wear masks again in class from now on.

The tier system in Baden-Württemberg depends on the number of corona patients in intensive care units and the so-called hospitalization incidence, which indicates the number of people who come to a clinic with corona symptoms per 100,000 inhabitants within a week. So far, the so-called corona warning level has applied in the southwest, which has already resulted in numerous restrictions for many unvaccinated people.

Similar rules also apply from Saturday in Hamburg: Even there, unvaccinated persons are no longer allowed to enter restaurants, bars and clubs from Saturday. The red-green Senate canceled the 3G model for several areas on Tuesday and instead made the 2G model mandatory.

The Green health politician Janosch Dahmen is in favor of faster booster vaccinations: Instead of the previously recommended six months, they should be given four months after the basic immunization, said Dahmen on Tuesday in the online edition of the Berlin “Tagesspiegel”. The goal must be to achieve a million vaccinations a day.

It is not sensible and counterproductive if citizens are turned away at state vaccination centers because the six months have not yet been fully reached. According to the information, Dahmen supported employer President Rainer Dulger’s demand that the six-month deadline should no longer be strictly adhered to in the fight against breakthroughs in vaccinations and many new infections, even among vaccinated people. Dahmen said: “We need political pragmatism now.”

The booster vaccinations are considered a central measure to contain the persistently high number of corona infections, because the vaccination protection decreases significantly after a while, especially in the case of older people. Recently, however, significantly fewer people had received the booster than would actually be possible after the six-month period.

In view of the significantly increased Corona numbers, Belgium has made vaccination compulsory for health workers on the way. The government’s core cabinet approved the requirement on Monday evening, as several broadcasters reported. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke told the Flemish broadcaster VRT that the “overwhelming majority” of care workers were already immunized. “But it cannot be that there is still a small minority that has not been vaccinated.”

According to the Minister, every employee in the Belgian nursing sector should be fully vaccinated by April 1 of next year. Otherwise there is a risk of suspension from service. The text of the law is to be presented to the entire cabinet on Friday and then goes to the State Council, which has an advisory role.

The number of corona patients in Belgium’s intensive care units has recently risen sharply. According to media reports, the clinics were called at the beginning of the week to keep 50 percent of their capacities free for corona cases and to postpone unnecessary treatments

The deputy FDP parliamentary group leader Michael Theurer has shown himself to be open to compulsory corona vaccination for certain professional groups. “The fact is: We have now agreed on extensive measures – the home office obligation, the 3G rule in buses and trains and also at work,” said Theurer on Tuesday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin” with a view to the plans of the SPD, Greens and FDP to fight against Corona. “And I personally can also imagine compulsory vaccination for certain professional groups, for example. (…) But we are still talking about this point today.”
