Deputy St Savior Raluca Kovacs proposed scrapping the food levy to ease pressure on islanders who are struggling during the cost of living crisis.

The island’s inflation rate is the highest in more than 30 years, with food prices up 10.4% year-on-year.

Ministers argued that removing GST on food would result in a loss of £10m in government revenue.

After a two-day debate in the State Assembly, 17 politicians supported the change while 27 voted against.
