The budget sets out the expenses for the nine departments of Stormont for this financial year.

However, due to the collapse of the executive branch, departments have operated without adequate budgets.

Officials run the departments in the absence of ministers.

When the DUP withdrew from Stormont in February 2021 to protest the NI Protocol, no budget had been agreed.

A new executive was not formed after the May election as the party refused to appoint a spokesman as part of its ongoing protest.
