Friedrich Merz, Norbert Röttgen, Helge Braun: One of the three politicians is replacing Armin Laschet as the upcoming CDU leader. According to a new survey, Germans have a clear favorite.

The German citizens consider Friedrich Merz to be the suitable successor to Armin Laschet for the CDU party chairmanship. That emerges from a representative survey by the opinion research institute Kantar, which the “Focus” commissioned. Accordingly, 26 percent of Germans consider Merz to be the best candidate, closely followed by Norbert Röttgen with 24 percent. The executive minister of the Chancellery, Helge Braun, only got seven percent.

Merz is even more clearly ahead among supporters of the CDU: There he is clearly in the lead with 45 percent. Röttgen comes to 26 percent among the party supporters. Braun is also clearly behind with nine percent.

Merz had already applied for chairmanship of the party in 2018 and 2020 to no avail. First he lost to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, then to Armin Laschet. Last year, Röttgen also competed in vain. The new chairman will be elected by all CDU members for the first time in December.
