Errors at the start of the Covid pandemic cost lives, according to a new report that labeled the government’s original policy as “one of the major public health failures” of all time in the UK.

Cabinet minister Stephen Barclay refused to apologize, insisting that the government “made quick decisions” after the report was released.

A bipartisan parliamentary committee study found Britain’s pandemic preparation was far too focused on the flu and ministers waited too long to enforce lockdown measures in early 2020.

MPs also said that while herd immunity is not an official government strategy, there is a “political approach of fatalism to the outlook for Covid in the community”.
