The number of new corona infections in the past seven days has reached a high. Meanwhile, alarming news is coming from hospitals in several regions.

The nationwide seven-day incidence has again risen to a high. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Saturday morning at 277.4. For comparison: the previous day the value was 263.7, a week ago it was 183.7 (previous month: 65.4).

The health authorities in Germany reported 45,081 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This can be seen from the RKI’s corona dashboard (as of 4.21 a.m.). On Thursday, the number of new infections reached 50,196, a record since the beginning of the pandemic. Exactly a week ago the value was 34,002 infections.

In addition, 228 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 142 deaths.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Friday as 4.70 (Thursday: 4.65). With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay.

A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

According to a report, the situation is worsening dramatically, especially in the clinics in southern and eastern Germany. In Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg “daily transfers between hospitals to compensate and maintain functionality” reported the newspapers of the Funke media group, citing a confidential report from the federal states. In Hessen, too, it is becoming more and more difficult to place patients in intensive care units.

The situation in the east is therefore also viewed as alarming, especially in Thuringia and Saxony. “The situation of the hospitals in these two countries is classified as dramatic, especially in Thuringia,” says the report of the transnational steering group of the so-called cloverleaf system for the distribution of patients in the event of regional overload.

Other countries are also preparing: In Berlin, the Charité has already canceled all planned operations. In a short film published by the clinic, employees complain of extreme stress and exhaustion – and direct an urgent appeal to the population.

According to the report, in order to relieve the clinics in high-incidence areas of corona, the federal states are also considering transferring patients across Germany for the first time: Baden-Württemberg has already considered moving patients over 700 kilometers to Schleswig-Holstein. In Bavaria, some patients have been moved around 400 kilometers from the southeastern part of the country to Würzburg in the north.

The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has been rising continuously for more than a week. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the value increased to 277.4 on Saturday morning and thus reached a new high for the sixth day in a row.
