Charles Vallow: Autopsy and obituary for Lori Vallow’s first husband

Charles Vallow, Lori Vallow’s husband, was shot dead by Alex Cox, Lori Vallow’s brother, who claimed self-defense, according to local news outlets. Alex Cox also died months later.

According to his obituary, Charles Vallow died on July 11, 2019 at the age of 62 in Chandler, Arizona. He was the father of Joshua “JJ” Vallow, who was also killed, along with JJ Vallow’s sister, Tylee Ryan, and Tammy Daybell, wife of Chad Daybell. Daybell married Lori Vallow five weeks after his wife’s death. The children went missing in September 2019 and their bodies were found at Chad Daybell’s property in June 2020, the FBI wrote in court documents. Charles Vallow filed for divorce from his wife but later withdrew the documents and said he wanted the marriage to work, according to Fox 10 Phoenix. Court documents revealed by the news channel also said Charles Vallow had filed a protective order against Vallow, saying his wife threatened to kill him.

The case is gaining renewed interest after the Netflix documentary Sins of Our Mother. It was released on Wednesday September 14, 2022.

Charles Vallow and Lori Vallow got into a fight while picking up their son in Chandler, Arizona when he was shot dead, according to Fox 10 Phoenix. Alex Cox, who was also at the home, intervened and the men engaged in a physical fight, law enforcement told the news channel. Police allege Cox shot Vallow multiple times in the chest, the news channel reported.

“On September 30, Vallow’s autopsy report was released. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office stated the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was manslaughter,” Fox 10 Phoenix reported.

Vallow also had bruises on the right side of his chest and scratches on his left arm, right hand and knees, according to a coroner’s report verified by Fox 10, the news outlet reported.

Bobby Vallow, one of Charles Vallow’s brothers, spoke to Dateline NBC about his brother and his murder.

“It wasn’t self-defense,” Bobby Vallow said, referring to what Alex Cox told police. “It was an ambush. There are many inconsistencies in this story.”

Fox 10 Phoenix reported that Lori Vallow and Charles Vallow were estranged at the time of his death.

“He said she chose a different path, but maybe he didn’t know how far the path she chose went,” said Bobby Vallow, one of Charles’ brothers.

One of Vallow’s sons told the news channel he didn’t think Cox acted in self-defense.

“I knew my father was the most passive person. He hated arguing with people. He had never been in a fight, he was in no way an aggressive person. I don’t believe it at all,” the son said, according to Fox.

His family wrote about his life in a short obituary published in the Austin-American Statesman, where Vallow had long lived. It said:
