Russian soldiers are said to have stolen agricultural vehicles in Ukraine and transported them to Chechnya. But they are probably useless there: the high-tech equipment was underestimated.

In the Russian-held town of Melitopol, Russian troops have apparently stolen several farm vehicles worth five million dollars and driven them to Chechnya. This is reported by the US news channel CNN. However, the machines could no longer be operated at the arrival point: they were blocked by remote control from Ukraine.

Specifically, the soldiers are said to have stolen all the equipment from a dealer in the city. It is said to be, among other things, tractors, seed drills or combine harvesters, which alone are said to cost $ 300,000.

The machines that have now been stolen are said to come from the US manufacturer John Deere. Like a car today, these are equipped with modern software for which updates are constantly being installed. You can use it to diagnose and troubleshoot remotely. It also includes a GPS transmitter. With this you can actually see how exactly a tractor drives on a field. But you can locate it just like a car.

According to CNN, this function showed that some agricultural machines are parts of the equipment, apparently in the Chechen capital Grozny. However, they had previously been blocked via software access. That means they can’t even be started. Even short-circuiting does not help, because the software is needed for operation.

Apparently, attempts are now being made in Grozny to circumvent the lockdown. “Even if they sell harvesters for parts, they make some money,” an unnamed contact told the US broadcaster. The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture had already criticized on Saturday that Russia had stolen several hundred thousand tons of grain during the war.
